Dynamic Flash content now accessible by Google
Breaking news: After speaking to the Adobe folks at Flash on the beach I learned that Adobe have released a tool to Google and Yahoo called Icabod which indexes the rendered output of the Flash player. What that means is Flash is now truly searchable. Including text loaded from XML files and other data sources. So the SEO of Flash movies should cease to be a problem in the near future.
There are still however significant challenges for Adobe, Google and Yahoo to over come.
For instance it is not clear how Icabod navigates Flash content. Simply traversing the display list and clicking everything could produce some unexpected results, especially given the wide range of approaches to authoring Flash files.
Directing traffic to deeplinks from search results is a challenge. Although there are some widely used approaches to this there is no standard of how application states are generated.
The faster we are ActionScript developers come up with some consistent solutions the better our SEO will be. We need to influence the development of the search algorithms the search engines develop. So that we end up with solutions which make sense for us all.
